When Bicycle Crashes Are Most Likely to Happen

Early morning hours carry their own risks for cyclists. Daylight is limited or just arriving, drivers are adjusting to morning traffic, and visibility for both parties can be poor even on clear days. A cyclist on a roadway shoulder or bike lane can be hard to see against headlights, shadows, or glare from a rising sun.

Evening commutes present a similar problem in reverse, as dusk settles in and fatigue builds for drivers heading home. Weekend mornings and afternoons, when recreational riders are out in greater numbers, also see upticks in crashes simply because more cyclists share the road with more cars.

Weather and road conditions shift the picture further. Wet pavement lengthens stopping distances, and reduced visibility during rain or fog makes it harder for drivers to spot a bicyclist in time to react. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 49,989 pedalcyclists were injured in traffic crashes in 2023.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do cyclists have the same rights on the road as drivers?

Yes. In Tennessee and most states, bicyclists are considered vehicle operators and must follow the same traffic laws as drivers, including obeying signals and riding with the flow of traffic.

Are intersections a common site for bicycle crashes?

Yes. Many bicycle crashes happen at intersections or driveways, where turning vehicles and crossing paths create higher risk than on straight stretches of road.

What injuries are most common in bicycle crashes?

Cyclists usually suffer head and brain injuries, broken bones, and road rash. Because a bicycle offers no structural protection, even lower-speed crashes can cause serious harm.

What typically causes bicycle crashes with vehicles?

Common factors include driver inattention, failure to yield, poor visibility, and vehicles turning across a cyclist's path.
