Frequently Asked Questions
Where do fatal crashes like this tend to happen?
Rural highways and two-lane state routes with higher speed limits and fewer barriers between opposing lanes tend to see a larger share of fatal crashes compared with city streets.
What makes a crash more likely to turn deadly?
Higher speeds, the size and weight difference between vehicles, and the angle of impact all affect whether a crash is survivable. Head-on or near-head-on collisions between two heavier vehicles, like pickup trucks, tend to carry greater risk.
Does seat belt use really change the outcome?
Yes. Seat belts keep occupants from being thrown from their seats or out of the vehicle during a crash, which lowers the chance of fatal injury substantially.
