Why Single-Vehicle Crashes on Mountain Interstates Can Be Severe
Interstates like I-70 in Clear Creek County run through mountainous terrain with sharp curves, steep grades, and rock walls close to the roadway. When a vehicle leaves the travel lanes, there may be little room to recover before striking a fixed object.
Collisions with rock walls or embankments can cause significant damage, even if no other vehicles are involved. Passengers are at risk of serious injuries due to the sudden impact and limited space between the roadway and the surrounding terrain.
Drivers traveling through mountain corridors should reduce speed, stay alert to changing road conditions, and maintain control, especially during evening hours when visibility can decline.
