Why Rural Intersection Crashes Often Involve Failure to Stop
Crashes at rural intersections frequently happen when drivers fail to come to a complete stop at posted signs. Open farmland and low traffic volume can create a false sense of security, leading some motorists to roll through intersections without fully stopping.
When one vehicle enters a crossing road without yielding, the risk of a side-impact collision increases. These crashes can still cause injuries even at moderate speeds. Limited traffic control devices, such as stop signs without signals, require drivers to stay alert and cautious.
Safety officials recommend approaching all rural intersections carefully, reducing speed well in advance, and scanning both directions before proceeding. Taking a few extra seconds to stop completely can help prevent serious collisions on county roads.
