Why Single-Vehicle Roadway Departure Crashes Can Be Extremely Severe
Single-vehicle crashes involving roadway departures often become serious when a vehicle leaves the roadway and strikes a fixed object, such as a tree. These types of impacts can cause significant damage because the force of the collision is concentrated on a single point.
Rural and wooded roads like Poplar Hill Road may include curves, elevation changes, and limited lighting, which can increase the risk of losing control—especially at night. Even brief lapses in control can result in a vehicle leaving the roadway.
Investigators typically examine tire marks, roadway conditions, and vehicle damage patterns to understand how and why the crash occurred. These findings help reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the collision.
