Frequently Asked Questions
Are secondary crashes common after an initial wreck like this one?
Yes. A vehicle left overturned or disabled in or near travel lanes on a highway can create a hazard for approaching traffic, which is why responders typically work to close or shift lanes quickly after a crash like this.
What makes a two-vehicle highway crash hard to investigate?
Investigators often have to rely on physical evidence, vehicle data, and witness accounts to reconstruct speed and position, especially when a vehicle has rolled over and its resting position no longer reflects the point of impact.
What usually causes crashes involving an overturned vehicle on an interstate?
Rollovers on highways can result from a range of factors, including sudden steering corrections, speed, or contact between vehicles. Investigators typically withhold a specific cause until their review is complete.
What to Do After a Two-Vehicle Highway Crash in Colonial Heights, VA
If you're involved in or witness a highway crash, move to a safe location if possible and call 911 right away. Even if injuries seem minor at first, it's worth getting checked by a medical provider, since some injuries from a rollover or high-speed impact don't show symptoms immediately. Keep any paperwork from police and medical visits, note what you remember about the scene while it's fresh, and follow up with your insurer promptly. If children were involved, it's especially important to have them evaluated even if they appear uninjured, since kids don't always express pain the way adults do.
