COLORADO SPRINGS, El Paso County, Colo., Oct. 4, 2026 — One person died on Saturday afternoon, October 3, after a three-vehicle crash at Constitution Avenue and Murray Boulevard in Colorado Springs. A second person was taken to a hospital, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department.

Officers responded to calls reporting a multi-vehicle crash at the intersection just before 1:30 p.m. One person was pronounced dead at the scene. The condition of the person taken to the hospital has not been released.

The Colorado Springs Police Department said investigators are looking into whether speed or alcohol played a role in the crash. No further details on the vehicles involved or those killed or injured have been released.

The crash remains under investigation. Police have not said whether any charges are expected.

We are deeply sorry for the loss suffered by the victim's family.

Who Faces the Greatest Risk in Multi-Vehicle Intersection Crashes

Intersection crashes involving several vehicles tend to put occupants in smaller or older cars at a disadvantage, since mass and crash structure differ sharply between vehicles. Drivers and passengers in the vehicle struck broadside or caught between two others often absorb more of the force than those in the vehicles that initiated contact.

Older drivers are overrepresented in intersection crashes generally, in part because reaction time and the ability to judge the speed of crossing traffic become harder with age. Pedestrians and cyclists caught in the same intersection face an even steeper risk, since they have no vehicle frame around them at all.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 17,008 motor-vehicle crash deaths occurred outside passenger vehicles in crashes involving passenger vehicles in 2023. That figure reflects how much of the toll from these crashes falls on people who weren't themselves inside a car.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a crash more likely to turn deadly?

Higher impact speeds, the angle of impact, and whether occupants were belted all affect survivability. A crash at an intersection where one vehicle is struck broadside tends to be more dangerous than a rear-end collision at the same speed.

Does speed really change the odds of surviving a crash?

Yes. Even modest increases in speed raise the energy released in a collision sharply, and that energy has to go somewhere, often into the occupants. Lower speeds give vehicle safety systems more room to work as designed.

Why do seat belts matter so much in crashes like this?

Belts keep occupants positioned so that airbags and crumple zones can do their jobs and prevent people from being thrown into the dashboard, windshield, or each other. Unbelted occupants are far more likely to be ejected or to suffer severe injury.

What should a family do after a fatal crash like this one?

Families can request the official crash report from the investigating agency, which often takes days or weeks to finalize. Keeping records of any communication with police or insurers can help later.

What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Colorado Springs, CO

If you're involved in or witness a multi-vehicle crash, call 911 immediately and stay clear of traffic if it's safe to do so. Even if you feel fine, seek a medical evaluation soon after, since some injuries like concussions or internal trauma don't show symptoms right away.

Get a copy of the police report once it's available and note the names of any responding officers. If you were a passenger or bystander, write down what you remember while it's fresh, including vehicle positions and the sequence of events, since memories fade quickly after a stressful event.
