CONWAY, Horry County, S.C., Oct. 8, 2026 — Three people were taken to hospitals with injuries on Tuesday evening, October 6, after a two-vehicle crash shut down all lanes of Hwy 319 near Harris Short Cut Road, according to Horry County Fire Rescue. At least one occupant was reportedly trapped in a vehicle before crews freed them.

Horry County Fire Rescue was dispatched to the scene at 5:18 p.m. The City of Conway Fire Department assisted at the scene, and crews worked to extricate at least one person pinned inside a vehicle.

All lanes of Hwy 319 were blocked while crews worked the wreck, and the public was urged to avoid the area for the safety of responders and to avoid delays. It was not immediately clear how long the roadway remained closed.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. No cause has been released, and further details on the people involved have not been made public.

Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we wish them a full recovery.

What Actually Cuts Down on Entrapment Crashes Like This One

Speed is often the difference between a crash that crumples a bumper and one that traps someone inside. The faster a vehicle is moving at impact, the more the frame and doors deform, and that deformation is what pins people in place and slows down rescue crews. Lowering speeds on a stretch of road, even by 5 or 10 mph, changes both how often crashes happen and how hard they hit.

Road design plays a direct role, too. Rural highways with narrow shoulders, limited lighting, and unprotected turn lanes near side roads tend to see more severe crashes than corridors with medians, turn signals timed for visibility, or roundabouts that force vehicles to slow before they cross paths. Cities and counties that have added these features at known problem spots have generally seen fewer serious injury crashes.

Driver behavior still matters on top of that. Following distance, attentiveness at intersections and on side roads, and simply slowing down in low-light conditions all shape whether a crash is minor or requires extrication equipment to resolve. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 2,442,581 people were injured in traffic crashes in 2023.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is distracted driving so dangerous?

Taking your eyes or attention off the road for even a few seconds means traveling a long distance blind at highway speed, cutting down the time a driver has to react to a stopped car, a merging vehicle, or a pedestrian.

How do weather and road conditions contribute to crashes?

Rain, fog, and debris reduce traction and visibility, which lengthens stopping distance and makes it harder to judge another driver's speed, especially on two-lane highways without a median.

What should I do immediately after a car accident?

Move to a safe spot if possible, call 911, and let police and medical crews assess injuries before deciding whether you feel well enough to decline treatment. Document the scene if you're able, and avoid discussing fault until officials have finished their investigation.
