COVINGTON, Tipton County, Tenn., Oct. 8, 2026 — Seven people were taken to hospitals after a five-vehicle crash on Wednesday afternoon, October 7, on Highway 59 South in Covington, Tennessee. A Tipton County Board of Education school bus was among the vehicles involved, according to the Covington Police Department.

The crash happened in front of the Covington Country Club. A vehicle had stopped on Highway 59 South to turn into the golf course, and several other vehicles had stopped behind it, when the school bus struck one of the stopped vehicles. That impact set off a chain reaction involving the other vehicles.

No students were aboard the bus at the time, and no children were involved in the crash. School officials went to the scene to assist in the investigation, the Tipton County Board of Education said.

One person taken to Regional One Health was listed in critical condition. The other six people transported were reported in stable condition.

The Covington Police Department and Tennessee Highway Patrol are continuing to investigate. The highway remained blocked following the crash, and police asked drivers to avoid the area while crews worked the scene. Anyone with information has been asked to contact the Covington Police Department.

We wish the injured a complete and speedy recovery.

What Makes a Chain-Reaction Crash Involving a Bus So Severe

A multi-vehicle pileup is really a string of smaller collisions, and each one depends on what happened just before it. When a line of vehicles has stopped in traffic, the gap between them matters as much as any single driver's speed. A following vehicle that closes in fast on a stopped car has little room to react, and the energy of that impact has to go somewhere: into the vehicle ahead, which then gets pushed into the next one in line.

Weight differences change how that energy gets distributed. A school bus can weigh ten times what a passenger car weighs, so a bus striking a stopped car transfers a lot more force than a car-to-car impact would. The car's frame and bumper are built to absorb a modest hit, not the push of a much heavier vehicle behind it, which is part of why pileups started by a bus or truck can involve several vehicles rather than two.

How far a pileup spreads also depends on reaction time down the line. Each driver has only the distance and the seconds the driver behind left them. Shorter following distances mean less time to brake or steer away, so a crash that starts as one impact can rapidly become three, four, or five.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does following distance matter so much in traffic?

The space a driver leaves determines how much time there is to stop if the vehicle ahead brakes or stops suddenly. Less distance means less time to react, which is a common factor in chain-reaction crashes.

Are secondary crashes common after an initial wreck?

Yes. Once traffic stops or slows for a crash, approaching drivers who aren't prepared for the sudden stop can strike stopped vehicles, adding more cars to the original wreck.

What makes multi-vehicle crashes difficult to investigate?

Investigators have to determine the sequence of impacts among several vehicles, which often requires physical evidence, vehicle data, and witness accounts to sort out which collision triggered the others.

What typically causes a pileup involving several vehicles?

Pileups usually start with one vehicle stopping or slowing unexpectedly, followed by one or more trailing vehicles that can't stop in time, setting off a sequence of impacts.

What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Covington, Tennessee

If you're involved in a multi-vehicle crash, try to stay where you are unless remaining in place puts you in danger, and turn on hazard lights to warn other traffic. Call 911 so police and medical crews can respond and begin sorting out what happened.

Even if you feel fine, it's worth getting checked by a medical provider. Some injuries, especially from being thrown forward or sideways in a sudden stop, aren't obvious right away. Get the names and contact information of other drivers and any witnesses, and photograph the scene if it's safe to do so.

File a report with the Covington Police Department if one hasn't already been started, and follow up with your insurance company promptly.
