Buttonwillow, CA (June 9, 2026) – A traffic collision involving multiple vehicles caused major delays along southbound I-5 just north of State Route 58 in Bakersfield on Tuesday morning, June 9. Early reports indicated two semi-trucks and two passenger vehicles were involved, with one vehicle catching fire shortly after the chain-reaction crash began.
Dispatch logs showed one semi came to rest in the center divider while another was hauling cattle. First responders arrived within the following minutes to assist those involved.
Traffic was diverted near Hageman Road for several hours while cleanup operations continued. By early afternoon, lanes had reopened, though backups stretched past Rowlee Road before congestion eased. The people involved were not publicly identified.
Investigators are still working to determine what led to the chain of events on the interstate.
We hope all those injured in the crash make a full recovery.
Why Semi-Truck Crashes Often Lead to Long Highway Closures
Crashes involving large commercial trucks can create major traffic problems even when injuries are not confirmed. Semi-trucks carry heavy cargo, fuel, and mechanical systems that may spill onto the roadway after a collision. Cleanup crews often need extra time to remove debris, leaking fluids, or damaged equipment before lanes can safely reopen.
Highway shutdowns may also become more complicated when several vehicles are involved or when traffic begins backing up for miles. Drivers sometimes try using shoulders, exits, or nearby rest stops to bypass congestion, which can create additional hazards. In some cases, barriers, signs, or center dividers are also damaged and require repair before normal traffic flow can resume. Large truck crashes frequently lead to extended delays because of the size of the vehicles and the safety checks required afterwards.
