When Pedestrian Crashes Are Most Likely to Happen
Pedestrian crashes cluster around the hours when daylight fades, but traffic stays heavy. Early evening, especially the stretch between 5 and 8 p.m., sees a steady overlap of commuters heading home and walkers who are harder to see as the sun drops. Headlights wash out contrast on roadway shoulders, and a driver's eyes often need a few seconds to adjust between a bright sky and a dim road edge.
Weekday commute hours bring a different mix of risk than weekend nights. On weeknights, fatigue and routine distraction play a bigger role; drivers are moving fast on familiar roads and may not expect anyone on foot along a highway shoulder. On weekends, impairment becomes a larger factor for both drivers and pedestrians.
Rural highways add another layer. Shoulders often serve as sidewalks, lighting is sparse, and speeds are higher than on city streets. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 68,244 pedestrians were injured in traffic crashes in 2023.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do most pedestrian accidents happen?
Many occur outside marked crosswalks, along roadway shoulders, or at intersections where a driver is turning. Highways without sidewalks, such as stretches of rural U.S. routes, see pedestrians walking on shoulders meant for emergencies, not for foot traffic.
Are pedestrian accidents more common at night?
Yes. Reduced visibility at dusk or dawn and after dark makes it harder for drivers to spot someone walking, especially on roads without street lighting.
What should a pedestrian do after being hit by a car?
Call 911 immediately if possible, or ask a bystander to call. Do not move unless staying in place puts you in further danger. Seek medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor, since some, like internal injuries or concussions, are not obvious right away.
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
Pedestrians generally have the right of way in marked and unmarked crosswalks at intersections, but drivers and walkers both share responsibility for watching traffic and crossing safely.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in Crestview, FL
If you witness a pedestrian struck by a vehicle, call 911 right away and avoid moving the injured person unless there's an immediate danger, like oncoming traffic. Note what you saw, including the time, direction of travel, and any details about the vehicles involved, since this information can help investigators later.
Anyone involved, whether a driver or a witness, should cooperate with responding officers and provide a clear, honest account. If you or someone you know was hurt while walking in Crestview, follow up with a doctor even after emergency treatment, since some injuries may not show symptoms right away. Keep records of medical visits and any communication with insurance companies in the days that follow.
