Frequently Asked Questions
Do most motorcycle crashes happen at intersections or crossings?
Many serious motorcycle crashes occur where another vehicle crosses a rider's path, since drivers and ATV operators sometimes misjudge a motorcycle's speed or distance before pulling out or crossing a road.
Does the type of road surface matter for motorcycle safety?
Yes. Loose gravel, uneven pavement, or a paved highway bordering soft shoulders can all affect how a motorcycle handles, especially when another vehicle enters its path unexpectedly.
What gear actually helps protect a rider in a crash?
A DOT-approved helmet, a reinforced jacket, gloves, and sturdy boots can reduce the severity of head, limb, and road-rash injuries, though they cannot prevent every type of harm in a collision.
What typically causes crashes between motorcycles and other vehicles like ATVs?
Common factors include one vehicle failing to yield or misjudging the gap needed to cross or merge, limited visibility, and the speed difference between a motorcycle and a slower-moving vehicle like an ATV.
What to Do After a Motorcycle Crash in Cumberland, Wisconsin
Anyone involved in or witnessing a motorcycle crash should call 911 immediately and avoid moving a rider unless there is an immediate danger, since neck and back injuries are common and can worsen with movement. Even riders who feel uninjured should be checked by medical personnel at the scene, as adrenaline can mask pain from internal injuries or fractures. It's also worth noting the time, location, and any nearby vehicles or witnesses, since that information helps investigators piece together what happened. Families of those involved can contact the Barron County Sheriff's Office or the Wisconsin State Patrol for updates on a case status.
