DAVIS, Yolo County, Calif., Oct. 17, 2026 — Multiple people were hurt on Friday afternoon, October 16, after a string of separate chain-reaction collisions backed up eastbound Interstate 80 near Joe Richards Boulevard in Davis, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The first reported crash came together shortly before 2:30 p.m. and involved several vehicles, including a gray Mercedes, an SUV, a dark Dodge and a pickup truck. Airbags deployed in at least one vehicle, and Davis firefighters responded as a precaution. One driver told responders she believed she had been rear-ended, though witnesses gave conflicting accounts of which vehicle was responsible, the agency's log shows.
Within the same stretch of highway, additional collisions were reported through the afternoon, including one described by the CHP as a four- to five-vehicle crash and another involving a silver Honda CR-V and several other vehicles. One involved driver was reported to have been driving recklessly just before the collision. Debris was reported across all lanes at one point, and at least one disabled vehicle required towing.
By late afternoon, the police had reclassified the incident as a six-vehicle crash with minor injuries. An ambulance was requested for the scene, and tow operators were called to clear vehicles from the roadway, authorities said. The California Highway Patrol's Freeway Service Patrol also assisted before closing out its response.
The extent of injuries has not been detailed, and the CHP has not said whether citations have been issued. The crash remains under investigation.
We wish the injured a complete and speedy recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does following distance matter so much on the freeway?
Leaving enough space between vehicles gives drivers time to react when traffic ahead slows or stops suddenly. Tailgating is one of the most common reasons an initial slowdown turns into a multi-car pileup.
Do secondary crashes usuallu follow an initial wreck?
Yes. Once a crash blocks lanes or creates debris, approaching drivers who don't see it in time can strike stopped vehicles or each other, adding more vehicles to the scene before it's cleared.
Why are multi-vehicle crashes harder to sort out than a two-car collision?
With several vehicles and drivers involved, investigators usually have to work through conflicting witness accounts, determine the order impacts occurred in, and figure out whether one crash triggered another before assigning responsibility.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Davis, CA
If you're involved in a pileup on the freeway, try to move to the shoulder if your vehicle is drivable and it's safe to do so, and turn on your hazard lights. Check yourself and passengers for injuries before stepping out, since adrenaline can mask pain. Call 911 even for what seems like a minor fender bender, since injuries and vehicle damage aren't always obvious right away. Exchange information with other drivers if possible, but stay out of traffic lanes while waiting for help. Afterward, see a doctor even if you feel fine, and keep records of any medical visits or vehicle repairs in case they're needed later.
