DAYTON, Liberty County, Texas, Oct. 18, 2026 — A 14-year-old boy was critically injured on Friday morning, October 16, after a Dayton ISD school bus struck him near US-90 and Stilson Road, authorities said. The bus driver fled the scene and was later arrested, according to the Dayton Police Department.
Officers were called to the highway intersection around 6:30 a.m. Friday after a report of a crash involving a pedestrian. Investigators said the bus driver did not stop to help the teen after the collision.
The boy's father, Andrew Conner, identified his son as Brantley, an 8th grader at Woodrow Wilson Junior High School. Conner said his son's injuries were severe enough that he was flown to a hospital, and as of Saturday night, the teen remained hospitalized in what his father described as a fight for his life.
70-year-old Ricky Eugene Cherry, a Dayton ISD bus driver, was arrested in connection with the crash Friday evening. Jail records show Cherry was charged with collision causing serious bodily injury.
Dayton ISD Superintendent Dr. Travis Young said in a statement that the district's "hearts and prayers are with the student and their family" and that the school system is committed to supporting those affected while respecting their privacy. The investigation remains open.
Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we wish them a full recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is distracted driving dangerous in situations like this?
Even a brief lapse in attention can keep a driver from noticing a pedestrian or reacting in time, especially at intersections where people may be crossing or waiting near the roadway.
How do road and visibility conditions factor into pedestrian crashes?
Low morning light, glare, and traffic volume near intersections can all make it harder for drivers to see pedestrians, and for pedestrians to judge oncoming vehicles.
What should someone do immediately after witnessing or being involved in a crash like this?
Call 911, stay at the scene, and avoid moving an injured person unless there's immediate danger. Waiting for police and medical responders helps preserve the facts needed for an accurate report.
Where do pedestrian crashes most often happen?
Many occur at or near intersections and highway crossings, where vehicle speeds and turning movements increase the risk to anyone on foot.
