Frequently Asked Questions
What can drivers do to watch for motorcycles?
Motorcycles are smaller and can be hidden in blind spots or between lanes of traffic. Checking mirrors and blind spots twice before turning or changing lanes, and watching especially closely at intersections, gives drivers a better chance of spotting a rider in time.
What should a rider do after a motorcycle crash?
If possible, a rider should move to safety, call 911, and avoid removing protective gear unless necessary. Getting checked at a hospital is important even if injuries seem minor, since some, like internal injuries or concussions, aren't obvious right away.
Are motorcycle crashes more likely at intersections?
Intersections are a common site for motorcycle collisions because turning vehicles may fail to see an approaching rider or misjudge their speed and distance.
How does the road surface affect motorcycle safety?
Loose gravel, potholes, and wet or uneven pavement affect a motorcycle's traction and balance far more than they affect a car's. Riders usually adjust speed and following distance to account for road conditions that a driver might not even notice.
What to Do After a Motorcycle Crash in Decatur, IL
Anyone involved in or witnessing a motorcycle crash should call 911 right away and avoid moving an injured rider unless there's immediate danger, such as fire or oncoming traffic. Even riders who feel fine after a crash should be evaluated by a medical professional, since adrenaline can mask pain from fractures or internal injuries.
It helps to write down what was seen or remembered as soon as possible, including vehicle descriptions, since details fade quickly. Filing a police report and keeping copies of medical records can matter later, especially in hit-and-run cases like this one. Decatur residents who witness a crash are encouraged to stay at the scene and speak with responding officers, since witness accounts are usually critical to identifying drivers who flee.
