Decatur, IL (January 9, 2026) – A rollover crash at a busy Decatur intersection claimed the life of an elderly man and left another with life-threatening injuries Wednesday morning.
The incident occurred just before 11:30 a.m. on January 7 at the intersection of North Water Street and East Mound Road, near several commercial businesses including a Target and Olive Garden. According to the Decatur Police Department, the crash happened when a 72-year-old man, identified as Gay Rolofson of Decatur, was making a left turn onto East Mound Rd from North Water St under a green arrow.
At that moment, a 32-year-old Decatur man driving northbound on North Water St reportedly ran a red light and struck Rolofson’s vehicle in the intersection. The violent impact caused a rollover, and emergency crews arrived swiftly to respond to the scene.
Rolofson was pronounced dead on site by the Macon County Coroner’s Office. The 32-year-old driver suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for emergency care. Authorities confirmed that there were no passengers in either vehicle at the time of the crash.
Our thoughts are with the family of Mr. Rolofson during this incredibly difficult time, and we hope for a full recovery for the injured driver.
