DeKalb Co., GA (May 14, 2026) – An ambulance overturned on Interstate 285 while transporting a patient Wednesday evening in DeKalb County.
The crash took place on Wednesday, May 13, just before the Exit 40 ramp near E. Ponce de Leon Avenue. The ambulance was in the process of transporting a patient at the time it flipped.
A second ambulance responded and took the patient to the hospital. The patient’s condition has not been confirmed. Both paramedics aboard the overturned ambulance were not seriously hurt.
The exact circumstances of the crash remain unclear. A sizeable gap was observed in the fencing running alongside the interstate near the scene, though it has not been confirmed whether the ambulance struck that fencing or whether another vehicle was involved.
The incident remains under review, and more details will be released as they become available. Our thoughts are with the patient and the paramedics affected by this crash.
What Risks Do Ambulances Face on Georgia Interstates During Emergency Transport?
Ambulances operate under significant pressure on highways like I-285 in Georgia. They often travel at higher speeds than surrounding traffic, and the combination of urgency, lane changes, and other drivers reacting unpredictably can create dangerous conditions. The weight distribution inside an ambulance — especially when a patient and equipment are on board — can also affect vehicle stability during sharp maneuvers.
Rollovers involving emergency vehicles are relatively rare but tend to draw significant attention because they put both patients and crew at risk simultaneously. When an ambulance is disabled mid-transport, a second unit must be dispatched quickly to continue care without interruption. These situations require fast coordination between multiple emergency units to ensure the patient’s condition does not worsen during the transfer.
