DELAND, Volusia County, Fla., Oct. 18, 2026 — A man died Sunday morning, October 18, after being struck by two vehicles at the intersection of US-92 and N. Kepler Rd in DeLand. State troopers say he was hit while crossing against a "don't walk" signal.
According to troopers, a 32-year-old man entered the crosswalk on a red pedestrian signal. An 18-year-old woman driving a GMC Sierra through the intersection on a green light reportedly swerved but could not avoid hitting him, investigators said.
The impact reportedly threw the man into nearby travel lanes, where a Volkswagen Atlas driven by a 44-year-old man struck him a second time, according to the crash report. He died at the scene.
Both drivers stayed at the scene and were there when investigators arrived, troopers said. The eastbound lanes of US-92 were shut down for several hours while crews worked the scene before reopening.
The crash remains under investigation. No further details have been released.
We are deeply sorry for the loss suffered by the victim's family.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do most pedestrian accidents happen?
Many pedestrian crashes occur at or near intersections, often involving turning vehicles or pedestrians crossing outside a marked walk signal.
Are pedestrian accidents more common at night?
Reduced visibility does raise risk, but daytime crashes like this one also happen often, particularly at busy intersections with multiple lanes of traffic.
What should a pedestrian do after being hit by a car?
If possible, call 911 immediately, stay as still as safe, and seek medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor, since some injuries aren't immediately obvious.
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
Pedestrians generally have the right of way in marked crosswalks, but signals matter: crossing against a "don't walk" signal can affect right-of-way and fault in a crash.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Crash in DeLand, FL
If you witness or are involved in a pedestrian crash, call 911 right away so responders and police can reach the scene quickly. Remember to avoid moving an injured person unless they're in immediate danger. Stay put if you're a driver involved, and cooperate with responding officers. Anyone involved, whether on foot or behind the wheel, should get checked by a medical professional afterward, since shock can mask pain or injury in the first hours.
