When Highway Crashes Cluster Around the Morning Commute
Crashes on multi-lane highways such as SR-99 often concentrate in the early morning hours, when commuter traffic builds quickly and the sun sits low on the horizon. Glare through a windshield can wash out brake lights and lane markings in seconds, especially heading into a sunrise on an east-west cross street.
Fatigue plays a role too. Drivers who left home before fully waking up react more slowly to sudden slowdowns or merging vehicles ahead. Mixed in with that early commute is a wider range of vehicle types, from passenger cars to delivery trucks and farm equipment common in the Central Valley, which adds more variation in speed and stopping distance than drivers may expect.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 17,008 motor-vehicle crash deaths occurred outside passenger vehicles in crashes involving passenger vehicles in 2023. That figure is a reminder that the risks on a highway extend beyond the people inside the cars involved, including anyone who stops to help or works roadside afterward.

What to Do After a Car Crash in Delano, CA
If you're involved in a crash near Delano, move to a safe spot off the travel lanes if the vehicle is drivable, and turn on hazard lights to warn oncoming traffic. Call 911 and wait for law enforcement or fire crews to arrive before exchanging information with the other driver.
Even if injuries feel minor at first, it's worth getting checked by a medical provider. Adrenaline can mask pain from whiplash or internal injuries for hours or even days after a collision. Keep a copy of any CHP incident report and follow up with your insurance company once you've been evaluated.
