DENISON, Grayson County, Texas, Oct. 14, 2026 — Two people were hurt Tuesday night, October 13, in a hit-and-run crash at the intersection of West Morton Street and North Mirick Avenue in Denison. Denison police are searching for a driver who fled the scene.
The crash happened around 8 p.m., Denison police said. One vehicle struck a light pole and broke it, while the driver of a silver mid-size SUV left without stopping, according to police.
The driver and passenger of the vehicle that hit the pole suffered minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital for treatment. The SUV sought by investigators may have damage to one side, according to the department.
Police closed the 500 and 600 blocks of West Morton Street for about an hour and a half to clear the downed pole from the roadway. The fleeing driver remains at large, and the crash is still under investigation. Anyone with information has been asked to call the department at 903-465-2422.
Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we wish them a full recovery.
Where Hit-and-Run Crashes Tend to Happen
Hit-and-run crashes cluster at ordinary intersections more often than on highways, particularly where a driver can slip away on a side street before anyone gets a plate number. Mid-block corners near businesses or residential blocks, like the kind found in many small Texas cities, give a fleeing driver more escape routes than a controlled intersection with cameras or heavy traffic.
Night hours raise the odds that a driver leaves the scene. Lower visibility and lighter traffic mean fewer witnesses, and a driver who has been drinking or has no valid license has more incentive to flee before police arrive.
According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, more than 70 percent of people killed in hit-and-run crashes were pedestrians and bicyclists in 2023. That pattern points to people outside a vehicle as the ones who pay the highest price when a driver chooses not to stop.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do right after a car accident?
Move to a safe spot if possible, call 911, and get medical care even for injuries that seem minor. Note the other vehicle's description, plate number, and direction of travel if it leaves the scene, and wait for police to file a report.
How do weather and road conditions factor into crashes like this?
Dim lighting, wet pavement, and reduced visibility at night all make intersections harder to judge and give a fleeing driver better odds of not being seen clearly. Poor conditions also slow emergency response.
Where do most traffic accidents happen?
Intersections account for a large share of urban crashes, especially where turning movements, cross traffic, and pedestrians overlap in a small space.
What can drivers do to stay safer at intersections?
Slow down on approach, check both directions even with the right of way, and avoid distractions. Leaving extra following distance gives more time to react if another driver runs a light or turns unexpectedly.
