DENVER, Denver County, Colo., Oct. 26, 2026 — One man died and four other people were hospitalized after a two-vehicle crash rolled both cars on southbound I-25 near West Colfax Avenue early Sunday morning, October 25, the Denver Police Department said. The crash was one of two fatal collisions investigators handled in the city overnight.
Officers responded shortly after 12:30 a.m. Sunday to the southbound I-25 crash near the edge of the Lincoln Park and Auraria neighborhoods. Police said a man attempting to pass another vehicle struck the front of that car, causing both to roll. The man was thrown from his vehicle and died at the scene. Four other adults from the vehicles involved were taken to a hospital; their conditions have not been released. Three of the injured were riding in the passing vehicle and one was in the vehicle that was struck.
The crash closed part of southbound I-25 south of Colfax along with two nearby on-ramps. All lanes and ramps had reopened by 6:13 a.m.
About an hour later, at 1:21 a.m., officers were called to a second fatal crash near South Sheridan Boulevard and West Evans Avenue in the Harvey Park neighborhood. A southbound driver struck a pedestrian who was crossing Sheridan outside a crosswalk, mid-block. The pedestrian died at the scene. Sheridan was closed in both directions at Evans and reopened shortly before 6:30 a.m.
Neither man killed in the two crashes has been identified publicly; both will be named by the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner. As of Sunday evening, no arrests had been reported in either case, and both crashes remain under investigation.
Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim who lost his life.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does impairment often factor into fatal crashes?
Alcohol, drugs, or fatigue are common contributors in fatal crash investigations nationwide, though authorities typically confirm impairment only after toxicology results and a full review are complete.
Where do fatal crashes tend to happen most?
Fatal collisions cluster on higher-speed roads like interstates and multi-lane arterial streets, and intersections or mid-block pedestrian crossings also see a steady share of deadly crashes.
What makes a crash more likely to turn fatal?
Higher speeds, the angle and force of impact, whether occupants are restrained, and whether a vehicle rolls over or ejects someone all raise the odds that a crash results in death.
How does speed affect whether people survive a crash?
Even modest increases in speed raise both the force of impact and stopping distance, so crashes at highway speeds are far less survivable than those at lower speeds.
What to Do After a Car Crash in Denver, CO
If you're involved in a crash, you should first check for injuries and call 911 if anyone needs medical help, even when pain or symptoms don't appear right away. Moving to a safe location out of traffic, turning on hazard lights, and waiting for officers to arrive and document the scene are all important first steps. Getting checked by a doctor afterward is worth doing even if injuries seem minor, since some, like concussions or internal injuries, can take hours or days to show symptoms. Keeping a copy of the police report and any medical records can also help later, whether for insurance claims or simply for your own records. Denver residents affected by a crash can also reach out to local victim services or the police department's non-emergency line for help accessing a copy of the report.
