Frequently Asked Questions
How are crashes like this investigated?
Police units such as a fatal squad or evidence technicians typically document the scene, gather physical evidence and interview witnesses. Investigators then compile findings into a report that can take time to finalize, especially when injuries are serious.
How long does a crash investigation like this take?
Timelines vary widely. Scene documentation can happen within hours, but a full report, especially one involving specialized units, often takes weeks as investigators review evidence and any available video or witness statements.
What role does impairment play in crashes?
Impairment from alcohol, drugs or fatigue is a factor in many serious crashes nationally, but whether it played a role here has not been confirmed. That determination usually comes later in the investigation, if at all.
Where do serious crashes like this tend to happen?
Intersections with higher traffic volumes, like major roads such as 8 Mile Road, see more crashes simply because more vehicles pass through them each day.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Detroit, MI
Anyone involved in a crash should seek medical attention right away, even if injuries aren't immediately obvious. Adrenaline can mask pain from soft tissue injuries or internal trauma for hours. If you're a witness or were nearby, cooperating with responding officers and evidence technicians helps investigators piece together what happened. For those affected by a crash, keeping records of medical visits and any communication with police can be useful later, whether for insurance purposes or simply to have an accurate account of events. If you or someone you know was involved, following up with the precinct handling the case is the best way to get updates on the investigation's status.
