Frequently Asked Questions
What usually causes pedestrian accidents like this one?
Pedestrian crashes commonly happen at intersections or crosswalks and usually involve a driver failing to see someone on foot, misjudging a turn, or not yielding the right of way.
Does a vehicle's speed matter for a pedestrian's chances of survival?
Yes. Lower speeds give drivers more time to stop and reduce the force of impact, which lowers the chance of serious injury or death for a pedestrian who is hit.
Where do most pedestrian accidents happen?
Many occur at or near intersections, especially where foot traffic from schools, transit stops, or busy sidewalks crosses vehicle lanes.
Are pedestrian accidents more common at night?
Reduced visibility after dark makes it harder for drivers to spot pedestrians, so a meaningful share of these crashes happen in low-light or nighttime conditions.
