Why Motorcycle Crashes Turn Serious So Quickly
A motorcycle offers no frame, no airbags and no seatbelt between a rider and the pavement or another vehicle. When a car and a motorcycle collide, the rider's body absorbs the impact directly, often separating from the bike and striking the ground, a curb or another vehicle. Even a crash that would leave a car's occupants with bruises can break bones or cause head and spinal injuries for a rider.
Speed plays a role, but so does basic physics at intersections and lower speeds. A motorcycle struck broadside or clipped while merging can throw a rider several feet, and there is no structure around the body to absorb that energy. Helmets reduce head injury risk but do not protect the rest of the body from the pavement or a vehicle's bumper.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 82,564 motorcyclists were injured in traffic crashes in 2023. That figure reflects how often riders are hurt even in crashes that drivers of enclosed vehicles routinely walk away from.
Frequently Asked Questions
What typically causes motorcycle crashes?
Common factors include drivers failing to see a motorcycle in traffic, sudden lane changes, turning vehicles misjudging a rider's speed or distance, and riders being struck at intersections.
Why are injuries often worse for motorcyclists than for other drivers?
Riders have no car body, airbags or seatbelt to absorb a collision. Impact force transfers directly to the rider, who may also be thrown from the bike.
How do left-turning vehicles cause collisions with motorcycles?
A common pattern involves a driver turning left across traffic and misjudging an oncoming motorcycle's speed or distance, pulling into its path.
What can drivers do to better watch for motorcycles?
Checking twice at intersections, allowing extra following distance, and looking specifically for motorcycles before turning can help drivers spot riders they might otherwise miss.
What to Do After a Motorcycle Crash in Detroit, MI
Anyone involved in a motorcycle crash should call 911 immediately and stay as still as possible until paramedics arrive, since some injuries are not immediately obvious. Even riders who feel capable of walking away should be evaluated at a hospital, as adrenaline can mask pain from fractures or internal injuries.
It helps to get the names and contact information of any witnesses at the scene, and to request a copy of the police report once it is filed. Photographing the scene, the vehicles involved and any visible injuries can also be useful later. In Detroit, residents can follow up with the 3rd Precinct for updates on an open investigation.
