Detroit, MI (April 14, 2026) – A motorcyclist was seriously hurt in a crash on Monday evening, April 13, on the westbound side of Interstate 96 near Outer Drive in Detroit.

Emergency units responded to the scene around 7:35 p.m. after receiving reports of a motorcycle down on the roadway. Upon arrival, they found the rider on the ground next to the damaged motorcycle. The man was conscious and breathing but had visible serious injuries.

He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. According to the rider, a white panel van changed lanes and struck the motorcycle, causing the crash. An independent witness at the scene reported seeing the same sequence of events.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.

Our thoughts are with those injured as they receive medical care.

What Factors Can Contribute to Motorcycle Crashes on Highways?

Motorcycle crashes on highways often happen quickly and can be tied to several common factors. Lane changes are one of the most frequent causes, especially when drivers fail to check blind spots before moving over. Motorcycles are smaller and can be harder to see, which increases the risk during busy traffic conditions.

Speed differences between vehicles can also play a part. Motorcycles may accelerate or slow down faster than larger vehicles, creating sudden changes in traffic flow. Road conditions, such as uneven pavement or debris, can further increase the risk for riders.

Protective gear, including helmets and padded clothing, can help reduce the severity of injuries in the event of a crash. Awareness from both drivers and riders remains a key part of reducing highway accidents.
