DETROIT, Wayne County, Mich., Oct. 19, 2026 — A pedestrian suffered critical injuries early Sunday morning, October 18, in a hit-and-run crash at Livernois Avenue and Grand River Avenue on Detroit's west side, according to Detroit Police.
Officers from the 10th Precinct were called to the intersection around 2:19 a.m. Sunday for a reported hit-and-run involving a pedestrian, police said. The driver, described as a woman operating a gray Chevrolet SUV, reportedly stopped a short distance away after initially leaving the scene.
Detroit EMS crews were dispatched to treat the pedestrian and were asked to expedite their response because of the severity of the injuries, officials said. The extent of those injuries has not been publicly detailed beyond being classified as critical.
Police evidence technicians were sent to the scene around 3:15 a.m. to process it on behalf of the department's Fatal Squad, which handles serious crash investigations. Investigators noted the unit can be assigned to cases involving critical injuries even when no death has occurred, and it was brought in here given the severity of the crash. No charges have been announced, and the crash remains under investigation.
We wish those injured a full recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
What injuries are most common in pedestrian accidents?
Pedestrians struck by vehicles often suffer broken bones, head and spinal injuries, and internal injuries, since there is little to absorb the impact of a vehicle collision.
What are the most common causes of pedestrian accidents?
Distracted or impaired driving, failure to yield, speeding, and poor visibility at night are frequent factors in pedestrian crashes.
How does vehicle speed affect pedestrian survival?
Higher vehicle speeds increase both the chance a pedestrian will be struck and the severity of the injuries if a crash happens, since there is less time to react and more force on impact.
Where do most pedestrian accidents happen?
Many pedestrian crashes occur at or near intersections, particularly where visibility is limited or crosswalks are poorly marked or unlit.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Crash in Detroit, MI
If you witness or are involved in a pedestrian crash, call 911 immediately and stay at the scene until help arrives. Even if injuries seem minor at first, a medical evaluation is important, since some injuries, especially head and internal injuries, are not obvious right away. If you're able, try to note details like the time, location, and any vehicles involved, and ask responding officers how to obtain a copy of the official report once it's filed. Looking out for pedestrians, especially in low-light hours, remains one of the simplest ways Detroit drivers can help keep intersections safer for everyone.
