Rollover Crashes and What the Numbers Show
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 33 percent of SUV-occupant fatalities occurred in vehicles that rolled over in 2023. That figure reflects how a single type of crash motion, a vehicle tipping onto its side or roof, accounts for a large share of deaths even though rollovers make up a smaller fraction of all crashes overall.
Rollovers happen in two broad ways. A "tripped" rollover occurs when a tire catches a curb, soft shoulder or guardrail and the sideways force flips the vehicle. An "untripped" rollover happens on open pavement, usually tied to a vehicle's height and how sharply it is steered. Taller, narrower vehicles such as SUVs and pickups are more prone to tipping than lower sedans because their center of gravity sits higher off the road.
Multi-vehicle rollovers, like the one reported in Detroit, often begin as a different kind of collision, a sideswipe or an impact that pushes one vehicle off its path, before the rollover itself happens. Occupant ejection and entrapment are both more common in rollovers than in other crash types, which is part of why fire crews frequently bring extrication tools to these scenes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which vehicles are most likely to roll over?
SUVs, pickup trucks and vans have a higher center of gravity than passenger cars, which makes them more prone to tipping during sharp turns or sudden maneuvers.
Does wearing a seat belt matter in a rollover?
Yes. Seat belts keep occupants positioned inside the vehicle during a rollover, which lowers the chance of being thrown against the roof or ejected, one of the leading causes of death in these crashes.
What is a "tripped" rollover?
It happens when a tire strikes a curb, guardrail or soft shoulder, and that sideways force causes the vehicle to flip, as opposed to a rollover caused purely by steering or speed on flat pavement.
What to Do After a Rollover Crash in Detroit, MI
If you're involved in a rollover, stay still and check for pain or numbness before trying to move, since internal injuries aren't always immediately obvious. If you can safely exit the vehicle, move away from traffic and call 911 if emergency crews aren't already on scene.
Even if you feel fine, get checked by a medical professional in the hours after the crash. Adrenaline can mask pain from neck, back or head injuries that show up later. Keep a record of what responding agencies tell you and request a copy of the official crash report once it's filed, as it will matter for insurance and any follow-up care.
