Detroit, MI (July 29, 2026) – A Detroit woman died early Wednesday after running onto the eastbound Davison Freeway near Oakland Avenue and being struck by a passing vehicle, according to Michigan State Police. Troopers were called around 12:20 a.m.
She was pronounced dead at the scene. Why she ran onto the freeway is not clear, officials said.
The freeway was temporarily closed during the investigation before reopening. Our condolences go out to her family and loved ones.
Why Do Pedestrians Sometimes End Up on a Freeway on Foot?
There are several possible explanations for why someone might end up on a stretch of highway not meant for foot traffic, and investigators typically avoid drawing conclusions without more information. A stalled vehicle nearby, disorientation, or an emergency situation are all things investigators consider when trying to understand how someone came to be there.
Freeways are especially dangerous for pedestrians because they aren’t designed with people on foot in mind. There are no crosswalks, sidewalks, or lower speed limits, and drivers have little reason to expect anyone in the roadway, particularly at night.
Because reaction time is already limited on a freeway due to higher speeds, a driver has only a few seconds, at most, to notice and respond to someone in the road. This combination of high speed and low expectation is part of why these crashes tend to be especially severe.
