Frequently Asked Questions
What should a rider do immediately after a motorcycle crash?
Call 911 right away, stay as still as possible if there's any chance of injury, and avoid removing a helmet unless it's necessary to help with breathing. Even if injuries seem minor at first, a medical evaluation is important because some injuries, especially to the head or internal organs, aren't obvious right away.
Are intersections a common site for motorcycle crashes?
Yes. Intersections involve vehicles crossing or turning across each other's paths, and a motorcycle's smaller profile can make it harder for other drivers to judge its speed and distance before a collision.
Does road surface play a role in motorcycle safety?
It can. Loose gravel, uneven pavement, or debris on rural roads can affect a motorcycle's traction and stability in ways that have less effect on a car or truck, particularly during sudden braking or a turn.
What gear actually helps reduce injury for riders?
A DOT-approved helmet, a reinforced jacket and pants, gloves, and over-the-ankle boots are commonly cited by safety officials as reducing the severity of injuries in a crash, though no gear can eliminate risk.
