DOTHAN, Houston County, Ala., Oct. 1, 2026 — A rear-end collision at the intersection of East Main Street and Beverlye Road sent at least one person to the hospital with minor injuries on Wednesday morning, September 30.

Dothan 911 sent police, fire crews, and Pilcher Ambulance to the intersection around 8:43 a.m. after a truck struck a vehicle that was stopped in a turning lane. The injuries were described as minor.

The Dothan Police are handling the investigation. No further details on the vehicles involved or the people hurt have been released.

The crash was one of three separate vehicle accidents reported in Dothan within less than an hour Wednesday morning, including two single-vehicle crashes that left drivers with more serious injuries elsewhere in the city.

We hope everyone who was hurt makes a full and speedy recovery.

What Actually Cuts Down Rear-End Crashes at Busy Intersections

Distraction is usually the quiet factor behind a rear-end crash. A driver glancing at a phone, a dashboard screen, or even a conversation can miss the brake lights ahead for a second or two, and at normal city speeds that is enough distance to close the gap before the brakes catch up. Turning lanes add another layer of risk because traffic slows unevenly, with some cars stopping fully while others are still rolling.

Engineering has made real headway on this problem. Better signal timing that gives turning traffic its own protected phase reduces the sudden stops that catch trailing drivers off guard. Rumble strips, improved intersection lighting and clearer lane markings give drivers more warning that traffic ahead is slowing. Roundabouts, where they replace signaled intersections, cut the speed differential between vehicles and have shown real reductions in rear-end and angle crashes alike.

According to the Federal Highway Administration, 3,165 intersection-related fatalities occurred in rural areas in the federal analysis summarized in 2023. Much of that toll traces back to the same mix of driver attention and intersection design that shapes rear-end crashes in town centers and commercial corridors alike.

Frequently Asked Questions

What injuries are typical in rear-end crashes?

Whiplash and other neck or back strains are the most common, along with bruising from seatbelts or airbags. Even low-speed impacts can cause soft-tissue injuries that take days to become noticeable.

What should I do after my car is rear-ended?

Move to a safe spot if possible, call police to document the crash, and get checked by a medical provider even if you feel fine at the scene. Some injuries don't show symptoms right away.

Does traffic volume change how commonly these crashes happen?

Yes. Stop-and-go conditions in heavy traffic increase the odds of rear-end collisions because following distances shrink and reaction times matter more.
