DOWNEY, Los Angeles County, CA, Sept. 17, 2026 — A motorcyclist was injured Wednesday morning, September 16, in a crash with a gray Toyota 4Runner on eastbound I-105 near Paramount Boulevard in Downey, according to authorities.

The collision was reported around 8:10 a.m. and left the motorcycle blocking a middle lane of the freeway, authorities said. Fire personnel arrived and reported the motorcyclist conscious and speaking, according to dispatch logs.

California Highway Patrol units requested a flatbed tow for the motorcycle and moved the incident to the eastbound shoulder near Paramount Boulevard while units worked the scene. A tow company was dispatched to remove the vehicles. The California Highway Patrol's Freeway Service Patrol closed out its response by mid-morning.

No further details on the extent of the injuries or the cause of the crash have been released. The circumstances remain under investigation.

Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we wish them a full recovery.

Why a Motorcycle Crash With an SUV Causes So Much Damage

The severity of a crash like this comes down to a mismatch. A motorcycle weighs a few hundred pounds; an SUV like a 4Runner weighs closer to two tons. When the two collide, the lighter vehicle absorbs most of the change in speed, and the rider has no frame, door, or airbag around them to spread that energy out.

Freeway lane changes create a lot of these conflicts. A driver merging or shifting lanes checks mirrors and blind spots for another car-sized shape. A motorcycle is narrower and can sit in a blind spot longer, or close distance faster than a driver expects. When following distances are already tight in freeway traffic, there's little room to react once a lane change starts.

A helmet and riding gear can reduce the impact against pavement or another surface, but they don't change the physics of the initial hit between a motorcycle and a much heavier vehicle. That gap between what gear can absorb and what a rider is exposed to is part of why these crashes tend to injure the rider and leave the other driver largely unhurt.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are motorcycle crashes more likely at intersections?

Intersections and merge points, including freeway on-ramps and lane-change zones, are common trouble spots because they're where a driver's attention is split and a motorcycle's smaller profile is easiest to miss.

Does road surface affect motorcycle safety?

Yes. Debris, uneven pavement, oil, or wet surfaces affect a motorcycle's traction and stability far more than a car's, since a bike relies on two contact points instead of four.

What gear reduces injury for riders?

A DOT-rated helmet, abrasion-resistant jacket and pants, gloves, and over-the-ankle boots reduce road-rash and head injuries in a fall, though they can't prevent the impact forces of a collision with a much heavier vehicle.

What typically causes motorcycle-vehicle crashes?

Common factors include a driver failing to see a motorcycle during a lane change or turn, following too closely, and speed differences between vehicles in fast-moving traffic.
