Huntington Beach, CA (May 21, 2026) – A two-vehicle crash left a 65-year-old Huntington Beach man dead on Wednesday, May 20, along Gothard Street near Lorge Circle. Police said a tan Chevrolet Colorado and a white Toyota Sienna were traveling southbound when the Chevrolet struck the Toyota shortly before 5:20 p.m.
Investigators said the Chevrolet then crossed into the northbound lanes and hit a tree beside the roadway. Emergency units found the Chevrolet driver unconscious inside the pickup. The man was taken to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.
The Toyota driver, a 60-year-old Westminster man, was not hurt and cooperated with investigators. Early findings indicated that impairment did not appear to be a factor in the Toyota driver’s case, while possible impairment in the Chevrolet driver’s case remained under review. No names were released following the collision.
Detectives are still working to determine the full sequence of what led to the roadway impact. We extend heartfelt condolences to the family and friends mourning this loss.
How Roadside Trees Can Increase Injury Risk in High-Speed Traffic Impacts
When a vehicle leaves the roadway and strikes a fixed object, injuries are often more severe than in other types of traffic-related impacts. Trees, utility poles, and concrete barriers do not move during contact, which can cause sudden force inside the vehicle. Even newer vehicles with airbags and reinforced frames may experience heavy damage during these types of impacts.
Road conditions, driver health, visibility, and vehicle speed are commonly reviewed after serious roadway departures. Investigators may also examine tire marks, vehicle movement, and damage patterns to better determine how the vehicle traveled before leaving the roadway. Medical findings can sometimes help explain whether a medical emergency, distraction, or other factor contributed before the vehicle crossed traffic lanes.
