Creston, IA (July 3, 2026) – One person was injured on Wednesday afternoon after a collision involving a passenger vehicle and a tractor on Highway 34, approximately 1.5 miles east of Creston near Skyline Bridge.

According to emergency officials, Union County Dispatch received a report of the crash at approximately 11:57 a.m. The Creston Fire Department, Greater Regional Health EMS, the Union County Sheriff’s Office, and the Creston Police Department responded to the scene.

Firefighters arrived to find a Ford Escape resting on its side with the driver trapped inside. Rescue crews extricated the driver by removing the windshield and cutting away the vehicle’s pillars and roof while paramedics provided medical care. Once freed, the driver was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. The extent of the driver’s injuries has not been released. The tractor operator, who was pulling a soybean drill, was not injured in the collision.

Both directions of Highway 34 were closed for approximately one hour as emergency crews assisted the injured driver, cleared debris, and removed fluids from the roadway. The damaged Ford Escape was later towed from the scene. The Union County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the crash and is expected to release a complete accident report.

We hope the injured driver makes a full and speedy recovery.

Safety Considerations for Crashes Involving Farm Equipment

Collisions involving farm equipment can present unique hazards because tractors and agricultural implements regularly travel at much slower speeds than surrounding traffic. Drivers approaching farm vehicles should reduce speed, maintain a safe following distance, and pass only when it is legal and safe to do so.

When a crash results in vehicle entrapment, firefighters may perform specialized extrication techniques using hydraulic rescue tools to remove portions of the vehicle while protecting the occupant from further injury. Investigators typically examine roadway conditions, vehicle positions, visibility, and driver actions to determine the factors that contributed to the collision.
