Osage, IA (July 1, 2026) – A driver was seriously injured on Monday afternoon, June 29, after a three-vehicle crash on Highway 9 near Osage.
The crash happened around 4:00 p.m., according to the Iowa State Patrol. Officials said a Pontiac Solstice was traveling west on Highway 9 when it rear-ended a westbound Chevy Silverado.
After the first collision, the Pontiac then hit an eastbound Chevy Silverado. The Pontiac driver, identified as 66-year-old Jay Schaub, was taken to Mitchell County Regional Health Center with life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the eastbound Chevy Silverado, identified as 43-year-old Jason Elgin, was also brought to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The westbound Chevy Silverado driver, 37-year-old Hakkon Rosendahl, was not hurt. The Osage crash remains under review as investigators work to confirm the full sequence.
We hope Schaub and Elgin receive the care they need and recover fully.
Three-Vehicle Highway Crashes Can Lead to Severe Injuries
Three-vehicle highway crashes can become serious because one impact may quickly lead to another. A rear-end collision can push or redirect a vehicle into nearby lanes, creating danger for oncoming traffic.
Highway travel can also reduce reaction time. Drivers may have only seconds to slow, steer away, or avoid a vehicle that has already been involved in a crash. When vehicles are moving in opposite directions, the force of contact can be especially severe.
Multiple-vehicle crashes usually require a careful review of vehicle paths, speed, lane position, traffic flow, and damage patterns. These details can help investigators understand how the first impact happened and how the later collision followed.
