DUBLIN, Alameda County, Calif., Oct. 21, 2026 — A multi-vehicle crash shut down lanes on westbound I-580 near San Ramon Road in Dublin on Tuesday morning, October 20, according to the California Highway Patrol. The agency reported that at least two vehicles were involved and that an ambulance was requested for injuries.

The California Highway Patrol stated that the crash was first reported shortly before 8:40 a.m. just west of San Ramon Road. Early radio traffic described a white Rivian SUV that had rolled over and come to rest on its wheels, and a silver Hyundai, both left on the right shoulder. A gray Chevrolet was also noted assisting at the scene, and the reporting party was said to be helping others involved.

Three additional vehicles reportedly stopped to assist before CHP units arrived. One vehicle was reported roughly 10 feet from the roadway, and debris from the collision was reported blocking a slow lane.

By about 9:05 a.m., the CHP had issued a SigAlert for westbound I-580 west of San Ramon Road, with lanes three, four, and five blocked and no estimated reopening time. The log shows lane three reopened around 9:23 a.m., while lanes four and five remained closed as crews continued working the scene. The CHP has not released the extent of injuries or whether any deaths resulted from the crash.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The CHP has not released the names or conditions of those involved.

Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we wish them a full recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do chain-reaction crashes happen?

They usually start when one vehicle suddenly slows or stops, and the vehicles behind it don't have enough space or time to react, especially in heavy traffic or at highway speeds.

How can drivers avoid getting caught in a pile-up?

Keeping a longer following distance, watching brake lights several cars ahead, and easing off the gas early when traffic is slowing can give drivers more room to stop safely.

What should I do if I'm stopped near a crash on the highway?

Stay in your vehicle with your seatbelt on if it's safe to do so, turn on hazard lights, and wait for responders to direct traffic rather than getting out near moving lanes.

How does fog or low visibility contribute to pile-ups?

Reduced visibility shortens the time drivers have to see slowing traffic ahead, which can turn a single stop into a chain of rear-end collisions.

What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Dublin, CA

If you're involved in a multi-vehicle crash, try to move to a safe area away from traffic if your vehicle is drivable, and call 911 to report injuries or hazards. Even if you feel fine, it's worth getting checked by a medical provider soon afterward, since some injuries from sudden impacts don't show symptoms right away. Take photos if it's safe, get contact information from other drivers and witnesses, and request a copy of the CHP report once it's available. Dublin's local hospitals and urgent care clinics can help with evaluation, and following up with your own doctor in the days that follow is a good idea, even for minor aches or stiffness.
