Simpson Co., MS (June 8, 2026) – A driver died on Monday morning, May 18, after his Dodge Ram Cargo and a dump truck were involved on Highway 49 North near Cox Road.

The accident happened around 8:04 a.m. in Simpson County. The report said a 2006 Freightliner dump truck was traveling north when a 2019 Dodge Ram Cargo collided with it.

The Dodge Ram Cargo caught fire after the roadway contact. Its driver, 26-year-old Taylor McGuire of Magee, was pronounced dead at the scene. The dump truck driver was identified as 42-year-old Joshua Thomas of Florence. He was not injured in the wreck.

No additional details about the sequence of the collision were released in the initial report. The fatal case remains under review as investigators continue gathering facts.

We extend our sincere condolences to McGuire’s family and loved ones.

Fire Risks Can Rise After Large Truck Collisions

Crashes involving dump trucks may be especially serious because of the size and weight difference between the vehicles. A passenger vehicle can face major damage when it makes contact with a large commercial truck.

Fire after a roadway crash adds another layer of danger. Flames can spread quickly if fuel, engine parts, or damaged vehicle systems are involved. This may make it harder for those nearby to reach a driver safely.

Truck crashes are usually reviewed for vehicle direction, lane position, speed, road layout, and final resting points. Investigators may also look at damage patterns to understand how the vehicles came together. These details can help explain why a crash led to fatal injuries and a fire.
