Columbus, OH (June 24, 2026) – A fatal traffic collision involving a dump truck and an SUV claimed one life on Monday afternoon in southeast Columbus.

The crash occurred around 2:40 p.m. on Monday, June 22, near the intersection of Winchester Pike and Refugee Road. According to police, a GMC Yukon was traveling southbound on Winchester Pike while a Kenworth dump truck was heading northbound before attempting a left turn onto Refugee Road.

Investigators said the two vehicles collided as the truck entered the intersection. The driver of the GMC died at the scene. The identity of the deceased had not been released as of this report.

According to a crash report, the dump truck driver told officers he had a green left-turn arrow before beginning the turn. Witnesses reported that the SUV was traveling at a very high rate of speed, with several estimating it was moving near 100 mph. Witness accounts also indicated the SUV crossed a concrete median before striking the truck.

Investigators continue to examine all factors surrounding the accident. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the person who lost their life.

How Speed Is a Fact in Collisions at Intersections?

Intersections are among the most complex parts of any roadway because vehicles may be traveling in different directions while drivers make turns, stop, or proceed through traffic signals. Even when traffic controls are functioning properly, timing and visibility can affect how drivers react to changing conditions.

Excessive speed can significantly reduce the time a driver has to respond to vehicles entering an intersection. Higher speeds may also increase stopping distance and make it more difficult to avoid contact when traffic patterns suddenly change. In severe cases, the force involved can result in catastrophic vehicle damage and life-threatening injuries.

Crash reconstruction specialists review vehicle positions, roadway markings, witness statements, and physical evidence to better understand what occurred. Information gathered during this process may help establish a timeline and provide a clearer picture of the circumstances leading up to a fatal roadway collision.
