Yates County, NY (June 6, 2026) – Emergency units reported to State Route 54 in the town of Torrey on Friday, June 5, after receiving reports of a 59-year-old driver who was killed after a dump truck crossed into oncoming traffic and struck his pickup truck.
New York State Police said the crash happened around 11:39 a.m. when a 1999 Sterling dump truck traveling eastbound encountered a vehicle ahead that was attempting a left turn. Troopers said the dump truck driver braked sharply, and although the turning vehicle avoided contact, the dump truck veered into the westbound lane.
Investigators reported the dump truck then struck a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado driven by a 59-year-old man who was alone in the vehicle. He was pronounced dead as a result of the collision.
The dump truck driver, a 38-year-old man from Penn Yan, was ejected during the crash and taken by ambulance to Geneva General Hospital before being flown to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. Officials said he suffered non-life-threatening injuries and remains hospitalized. We extend our sympathy to those mourning this loss.
What Investigators Review in Multi-Vehicle Highway Maneuver Crashes
When crashes involve sudden braking and lane departures, investigators often focus on driver reactions, vehicle spacing, and roadway positioning. These factors can help explain how a vehicle moved from its intended lane into opposing traffic.
Roadway conditions, nearby traffic maneuvers, and visibility are also reviewed to understand how quickly drivers had time to respond. In some cases, witness accounts and physical evidence such as skid marks and debris fields help reconstruct the sequence of movement.
Investigators may also examine whether abrupt braking or evasive actions contributed to lane instability. Combined findings help establish how the crash developed in the moments before impact.
