Why Pedestrian Deaths Often Occur in High-Traffic Commercial Areas
Intersections like Merritt Blvd and Wise Ave are particularly dangerous for pedestrians, especially during evening hours when visibility begins to drop, and traffic levels remain high. Wide intersections with multiple lanes can make it more difficult for pedestrians to cross safely, even when using crosswalks.
In urban and suburban centers, the combination of vehicle congestion, turning traffic, and pedestrian activity increases the risk of serious accidents. Investigators in cases like this often review signal timing, vehicle speed, and pedestrian placement to determine how the crash occurred.
Efforts to reduce fatal pedestrian crashes include clearer signage, improved lighting, and dedicated crossing signals. As pedestrian deaths rise nationwide, local traffic authorities continue to study and improve safety at high-risk intersections.
