DUNDEE, Monroe County, Mich., Nov. 7, 2026 — All northbound lanes of US-23 near Dundee, Michigan were closed for hours on Thursday afternoon, November 4, after a crash left at least one person injured, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.
The crash happened around 12:49 p.m. near the 14-mile marker, just south of the Exit 13 interchange at Ida West Road, the Dundee Police Department said. Northbound lanes remained shut down as of 3 p.m. that day while crews worked the scene.
Dundee police said the crash brought down tension cables along the highway, which slowed the cleanup and kept the closure in place longer than a typical crash response. Traffic was being diverted off US-23 at Exit 13, and the department urged drivers to find an alternate route while repairs continued.
This is an injury crash, police said, although it was not reported how many people were injured. Crews from the Dundee Fire Department, Michigan State Police, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, Summerfield Fire Department and Monroe Community Ambulance all responded to assist at the scene.
No additional details about the vehicles involved or a possible cause have been released. The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.
We wish those injured a full recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
What injuries are most common in highway crashes like this one?
Depending on speed and impact, drivers and passengers can suffer anything from whiplash and bruising to broken bones, head injuries or more serious trauma. Severity usually depends on how fast vehicles were moving and whether seat belts were worn.
What typically causes crashes on highways like US-23?
Common factors include distracted driving, following too closely, speeding, and sudden lane changes or obstacles in the roadway. Investigators review scene evidence, witness accounts and vehicle data to determine a cause.
Why does speed make a highway crash more severe?
Higher speeds reduce the time drivers have to react and increase the force of impact, which raises the risk of serious injury or death. Even a small increase in speed can significantly change the outcome of a crash.
Why is distracted driving considered so risky on highways?
At highway speeds, a driver who looks away for even a few seconds can travel the length of a football field without watching the road. That lost time removes any chance to brake or steer away from a hazard.
