Greenfield, CA (May 21, 2026) – A 12-year-old boy was seriously hurt after the electric bicycle he was riding struck a vehicle along the 300 block of Thorp Avenue in Greenfield.
Investigators said the boy had been riding the e-bike against the flow of traffic when the collision occurred. Police determined the child rider was at fault in the roadway accident.
The boy was not wearing a helmet at the time. Emergency units airlifted him to a Bay Area hospital for treatment, and he is expected to survive. The adult driver remained at the roadway and cooperated fully with investigators.
Officials said the motorist was licensed, insured, and not under the influence. Additional details about the wreck had not been made public as of Friday.
Police continue working to determine all factors connected to the crash. We are thinking of the child and his loved ones as he continues his recovery.
Why E-Bike Safety Rules Matter for Young Riders
Electric bicycles can travel faster than traditional bikes, which may increase the risk of serious harm when riders do not follow traffic laws. Young riders are especially vulnerable because they may have less experience judging speed, roadway spacing, and traffic patterns.
California law requires anyone under 18 to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle or an e-bike. Riders must also travel in the same direction as surrounding traffic. Going against traffic can reduce reaction time for both riders and drivers, especially on neighborhood streets with limited space.
Class 3 e-bikes have additional age restrictions because of their higher speeds. These bikes can reach up to 28 miles per hour with pedal assistance. Communities across California have increased safety education efforts as e-bike use continues to grow among teens and children.
