Staten Island, NY (May 29, 2026) – Four people were hurt Friday morning, May 29, after a school bus and passenger vehicle were involved in a crash on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.
The collision happened around 6:20 a.m. on the Brooklyn-bound upper level of the bridge. According to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police Department, a passenger vehicle slowed due to merging traffic, and the school bus then rear-ended it.
Four people were taken by EMS to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. A source with knowledge of the investigation said two minors and two adults were among those injured, though officials did not confirm which vehicles they were in.
Three lanes on the Brooklyn-bound upper level were temporarily closed while emergency crews worked at the scene and cleared the vehicles. Normal traffic flow resumed around 7:19 a.m.
The crash remains under investigation. We hope everyone injured recovers quickly and safely.
Why School Bus Crashes Can Cause Major Delays
School bus crashes can create significant traffic problems, especially on bridges where drivers have limited space to move around a blocked lane. When several lanes close during the morning commute, backups can spread quickly to nearby highways and ramps.
Even when injuries are not life-threatening, people involved may still need medical checks for neck, back, head, shoulder, or limb pain. Children may also need careful evaluation after a sudden rear-end impact. Investigators may review merging traffic, vehicle spacing, speed, braking, traffic camera footage, and witness statements to understand how the collision happened.
