How Alcohol Can Affect Drivers During Overnight Travel
Alcohol can reduce reaction time, slow decision-making, and affect coordination behind the wheel. These effects often become more dangerous during overnight hours when visibility is lower and drivers may already be dealing with fatigue. Even small amounts of alcohol can make it harder to judge distance, recognize hazards, or react to changing traffic conditions.
Intersections are especially risky because drivers must quickly process traffic signals, turning vehicles, and cross traffic. A delayed response can increase the chance of a serious collision. In many overnight crashes, investigators may also review roadway lighting, speed, and witness statements to better understand what happened before the vehicles came into contact.
