Ontario, CA (September 9, 2026) – Authorities reported a two-vehicle collision on westbound Interstate 10 west of Etiwanda Avenue at about 1:59 a.m. on Monday, September 7.

The California Highway Patrol log identified a white van and a red sedan. Initial entries indicated that the van rear-ended the other vehicle. One vehicle later overturned and came to rest on its roof along the right shoulder, while the other remained in a middle lane.

Medical assistance and two tow trucks were requested shortly after 2:00 a.m. Available records did not identify who was injured or describe the extent of the injuries. One vehicle was also reported in the center divider during the early updates. Detectives continue investigating the crash.

We hope anyone hurt recovers fully.

Why Can a Vehicle Overturn After a Rear-End Impact?

A rear-end impact does not always leave both vehicles traveling straight ahead. Contact at an angle can push a vehicle sideways, causing its tires to lose alignment with its direction of travel and increasing the chance of a rollover.

Roadway features can also influence what happens after the initial contact. A vehicle that reaches a curb, embankment, soft shoulder, or uneven pavement while moving sideways may trip and rotate onto its side or roof.

Vehicle height, speed, steering input, and the angle of contact all affect rollover risk. Taller vehicles generally have a higher center of gravity, but passenger cars can overturn as well under certain conditions. Seat belts help keep occupants positioned within the protective structure during this type of accident.
