What Actually Reduces Pedestrian
Crashes between pedestrians and vehicles outside of crosswalks often come down to timing: a driver's attention drifts for a second, a pedestrian steps off the curb without a clear gap, and neither has time to react. Distraction on either side, a phone glance, a dark jacket in low light, a car radio or conversation, removes the last chance either person would have had to stop or swerve.
Road design plays a bigger role in preventing these crashes than most people realize. Street lighting at mid block crossings, raised medians that give pedestrians a safe place to pause, narrower lanes that slow traffic, and signal timing that gives walkers a head start before cars get a green light have all been shown to cut pedestrian crashes in cities that have tried them. Roundabouts, where used in place of high speed intersections, also reduce the kind of severe, high speed impacts that are hardest to survive.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 77 percent of pedestrian fatalities occurred in the dark in 2023. That single fact points to lighting and visibility as one of the more fixable pieces of the problem, alongside driver attention and road layout working together.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does vehicle speed affect a pedestrian's chance of survival?
Survival odds drop sharply as impact speed rises. A pedestrian struck at lower speeds has a much better chance of walking away than one struck at highway speeds, which is why speed limits and road design near crossings matter.
Where do most pedestrian crashes happen?
A large share occur outside marked crosswalks, often on multi lane roads where drivers are moving at higher speeds and pedestrians may misjudge the distance or speed of an approaching vehicle.
Are pedestrian crashes more common at night?
Yes. Most pedestrian fatalities happen after dark, when visibility is lower for both drivers and people on foot, even on streets with some lighting.
What should a pedestrian do after being hit by a car?
If possible, call 911 immediately, stay as still as safety allows, and seek medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor. Some injuries, including head trauma, are not obvious right away.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Crash in East Las Vegas, NV
If you witness or are involved in a pedestrian crash, you should call 911 right away and wait for police to arrive and document the scene. Getting checked by a medical professional afterward is important even for those who feel uninjured, since shock can mask pain or swelling. Keeping a copy of the police report and any medical records can help later, whether for insurance purposes or simply to have an accurate record of what happened.
