Frequently Asked Questions
Why does following distance matter so much in traffic?
Keeping a safe gap behind the vehicle ahead gives a driver time to stop or react if traffic slows suddenly. Too little space is a common factor when one crash leads to another.
Do crashes often trigger additional collisions nearby?
Yes. A stopped or slowed vehicle at a crash scene can catch following traffic off guard, especially at night or in heavy traffic, leading to a second or third impact before the scene is cleared.
Why are multi-vehicle crashes harder to investigate than single-car wrecks?
With three or more vehicles involved, investigators have to work out the order of impacts, how fast each vehicle was moving, and who had the right of way at each stage, which takes more time than a two-car crash.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in East Los Angeles, CA
If you're involved in a crash with multiple vehicles, stay in your car if it's unsafe to get out, especially if traffic is still moving nearby. Remember to turn on hazard lights and call 911 so responders can manage the scene and keep other drivers from adding to the pileup. Even if you feel fine, get checked by a medical professional soon after. Adrenaline can mask pain from whiplash, internal injuries, or concussions that show up hours later. Make sure to exchange information with other drivers when it's safe, and take photos of vehicle positions and damage if you're able. Keep a copy of the CHP or police report for your records, and follow up with your doctor if any new symptoms appear in the days after the crash.
