East Lyme, CT (January 30, 2026) – A serious crash involving two vehicles shut down a portion of Interstate 95 South in East Lyme on Thursday afternoon, according to officials from the Connecticut Department of Transportation.
The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. on January 29 near Exit 73. State police confirmed that one of the vehicles caught fire following the collision, prompting an immediate emergency response and temporary closure of the highway in the area.
Firefighters and EMS crews arrived quickly to suppress the vehicle fire and provide aid to the injured. Although injuries were confirmed, authorities have not yet released the number of people hurt or the severity of those injuries.
Traffic was heavily impacted for a period as emergency teams worked to extinguish the flames, clear debris, and treat those involved. The affected section of I-95 South has since been reopened.
The crash remains under investigation by Connecticut State Police as they work to determine the events that led to the collision and subsequent vehicle fire.
