What Makes Intersection Crashes So Hard to Walk Away From
Closing speed decides most of what happens in an intersection crash. Two vehicles crossing paths at even moderate speeds can generate forces far beyond what either would face in a straight-line stop, because the energy from both directions has to go somewhere when metal meets metal at an angle.
Vehicle design plays a role too. Modern cars are built with crumple zones at the front and rear meant to absorb impact in a head-on or rear-end collision, but a side or angled hit at an intersection usually strikes areas with less built-in protection, closer to where people sit. A larger vehicle, like an ambulance, also carries more weight and momentum, which changes how a crash plays out for the occupants of the smaller vehicle.
Impairment and fatigue remain common factors in intersection crashes because they slow the decisions drivers need to make in seconds, whether to brake, swerve, or yield. A driver who is tired or impaired may misjudge how fast another vehicle is approaching or fail to register a signal change in time. According to the Federal Highway Administration, 8,617 people were killed in intersection-related crashes in the federal analysis summarized in 2023.
Frequently Asked Questions
What injuries are most common in car accidents?
Intersection and angled-impact crashes usually cause whiplash, head and neck injuries, broken bones, and bruising from seatbelts or airbags. Injury severity depends heavily on speed and where the impact occurs on the vehicle.
What are the most common causes of car accidents?
Distraction, speeding, failure to yield, and impaired or fatigued driving are frequently cited factors in intersection crashes, though the specific cause of any individual crash is determined by investigators.
How does speed affect crash severity?
Higher speed increases the force of impact and reduces the time drivers have to react or brake, which generally results in more severe vehicle damage and greater risk of injury.
Why is distracted driving so dangerous?
Even a glance away from the road can prevent a driver from noticing a changing signal, a crossing vehicle, or a pedestrian in time to stop or adjust.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Easton, Maryland
If you're involved in a crash in Easton, move to a safe area if possible and call 911 to report it. Even if injuries seem minor, a medical evaluation is worth getting, since some injuries like whiplash or internal bruising don't show symptoms right away.
Exchange information with the other driver and note the names of any responding officers or agencies. If emergency vehicles were involved, as can happen at busy intersections, it's especially important to get an official incident report, since multiple agencies may be involved in documenting what happened. Keep records of any medical visits or vehicle damage for your own reference going forward.
