When Pedestrian Crashes on Busy Roads Are Most Likely
Crashes between pedestrians and large vehicles tend to cluster around certain hours, not randomly throughout the day. Midday and early afternoon traffic on commercial corridors brings a mix of trucks, turning vehicles, and people on foot crossing between lanes, conditions that leave little time for a driver to react if someone steps into a travel lane unexpectedly.
Visibility plays a role even in daylight. A pedestrian walking between stopped or slow-moving vehicles can be hidden from a truck driver's view until the moment of impact, especially with a tractor-trailer's long blind spots along its sides and front corners.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 84 percent of pedestrian fatalities occurred in urban areas in 2023. Busy corridors like commercial highways through small towns combine higher vehicle volumes with pedestrian activity, a mix that raises the chance of a crash whenever someone crosses outside a marked crosswalk or steps between vehicles.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
Pedestrians generally have the right of way in marked and unmarked crosswalks once they have entered the roadway, but drivers and pedestrians both carry responsibility for watching traffic before proceeding.
What can drivers do to help avoid hitting someone on foot?
Slowing down near intersections and commercial driveways, scanning between parked or stopped vehicles, and avoiding distractions all give a driver more time to spot a pedestrian before it's too late.
What injuries are most common when a pedestrian is hit by a vehicle?
Pedestrians struck by vehicles, especially larger ones like trucks, usually suffer head trauma, broken bones, and internal injuries. Crashes involving tractor-trailers carry a higher risk of fatal injury because of the vehicle's size and weight.
What usually causes pedestrian crashes?
Common factors include pedestrians crossing outside crosswalks or between vehicles, driver inattention, low visibility, and vehicles making turns without seeing someone in their path.
