Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I'm stopped near a crash on the highway?
Turn on hazard lights as soon as possible, move as far off the travel lane as conditions allow, and stay alert for vehicles approaching from behind, since stopped traffic is a common cause of secondary collisions.
Why do pile-ups happen when traffic suddenly stops?
Drivers approaching a line of stopped cars frequently do not have enough time or distance to react, especially if they are following too closely or visibility is limited.
Why is following distance so important in traffic?
Keeping extra space between vehicles gives drivers more time to brake safely if traffic ahead slows or stops suddenly, which can prevent a single stop from becoming a multi-vehicle crash.
Are secondary crashes common after an initial wreck?
Yes. Once one vehicle stops or crashes, trailing vehicles can strike it or each other before drivers have a chance to slow down, which is why early warning and distance matter.
